The Green Eggs and Ham
Video Scavenger Hunt

Green Eggs and HamIf you're a fan of Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss, you'll like this special Green Eggs and Ham video scavenger hunt.

The concept is simple: Have your team go through all the actions described in the book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and take a video while you do them. Each thing you do gets you points. Everything you do in combination (in a house with a mouse) gets you more points — and the more combinations, the better!

Scavenger Hunt Planning

If your team has four or five people on it (see the Video Scavenger Hunt page for more general planning tips), you'll need one to film, one to be "Sam-I-am," another to be the guy who tries the green eggs and ham, and others for the extras (boat captain, train riders) — and, of course, everyone has to work to figure out what and where and how.

It's fun to trade the roles, but you don't have to, especially if one person really looks like "Sam-I-am" and is dying to play the part. :)

In planning for this event, there are few things to decide:

  • Should every team have a copy of the book, for inspiration and direction? If yes, you can either scrounge up copies for everyone, or you can make finding the book (at the library, in your bookshelf, at a neighbor's house) part of the hunt. However, you can run the hunt with just the information below, if you want.
  • Do "green eggs and ham" have to be part of the event? That is, to be authentic, every video scene should have one person offering a plate of green eggs (sunny-side up, green yoke) and ham to another person. That could be part of the challenge (go to the grocery store; get eggs, ham and green dye; find a stove; cook the eggs), or it may be more than you want to mess with. If you have enough time, you ought to include them, and you might include points for videos of buying the supplies and cooking them.
  • If you want to be really adventurous, require that each scene have someone actually eating green eggs and ham. That means you'll need to cook up lots of eggs, carry them around, etc. It's up to you.

Video Scavenger Hunt Activities

First, here are some of the last lines from the book, to set the stage:

Say!
I like green eggs and ham!
I do!! I like them, Sam-I-am!
And I would eat them in a boat!
And I would eat them with a goat...
And I will eat them in the rain.
And in the dark. And on a train.
And in a car. And in a tree.
They are so good, so good, you see!

So I will eat them in a box.
And I will eat them with a fox.
And I will eat them in a house.
And I will eat them with a mouse.
And I will eat them here and there.
Say! I will eat them ANYWHERE!

Each team should show someone doing the following:

Eating green eggs and ham (for real, or not — see the Planning section above)

And trying them...

  1. Here and there (5 points, with an extra 10 points for the team that does the best job of showing what "here or there" means)
  2. Anywhere (same as "here and there" -- 5 points, plus 10 points for the best "anywhere")
  3. In a house (10 pts)
  4. With a mouse (30 pts for a real mouse; 10 pts for a fake one)
  5. In a box (15 pts)
  6. With a fox (60 pts for a real fox; 15 pts for a fake one)
  7. In a car (10 points, with an extra 5 points for the "coolest" car, as determined by the judge)
  8. In a tree (10 points)
  9. In a train (30 pts)
  10. In the dark (10 pts — must be light enough to show up on the video)
  11. In the rain (10 pts, real or fake rain)
  12. With a goat (50 pts for a real goat, 15 pts for a fake one)
  13. On a boat (30 pts)

If you do rhyming combinations (in a house, with a mouse), you get the combined points. So, for example, if you had a mouse and cooperative house, you could film in the house, then with the mouse, then with both together, and get 10 + 30 + 40 points.

However, it has to be clear — For example, you can't just show a mouse on a floor and claim that proves it's in a house. You have to show the house and the mouse (and the green eggs and ham) at the same time, all together. How? That's the challenge. The judges will determine what works or not.

The more combinations you make (in the rain, in the dark, on a train), the more multiples of points you get.

If anyone can do ALL of them at the same time — well, you should at least buy them a copy of the book, and probably award them an extra 1,000 points or something. (And, send me a copy of the video!)

Enjoy!

Have fun with this "green eggs and ham" video scavenger hunt, in honor of Dr. Seuss!
